Course Description:
Mass timber construction is a rapidly growing market: sustainability, speed of construction, and aesthetics are among the advantages that are driving interest in this new way of building with an “old” material. This presentation will give a brief overview of the various mass timber products and the types of buildings well-suited for mass timber. The course will cover the recent history of mass timber construction in New York City, including projects completed and currently underway. The course will also review the current building code provisions relevant to mass timber in New York City as well as the upcoming changes in the new code, which is awaiting approval by the City Council.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Distinguish different mass timber products and how they are used.
2. List the types of projects well-suited for mass timber.
3. Understand the current limits in the New York City Building Code for mass timber construction.
4. Anticipate the upcoming changes to the New York City Building Code related to mass timber.
