This panel discussion and open conversation led by Pratt Professors Rebecca Krucoff,
Christopher Cirillo and Lisa Ackerman will explore how we can identify and retain the key
elements of our communities as we struggle to rebuild from these trying times. Preservation has
to focus not just on retaining our physical environment but on preserving the intangible heritage
that makes places special to their communities. The necessary social distancing measures
faced during the COVID-19 pandemic have endangered some of the most important aspects of
NYC’s urban fabric such as local businesses, gathering places, cultural institutions, and
community centers. By engaging in place-keeping practices we hope to find ways to return to a
city that still resonates with the soul of the New York we have always cherished.
