Spacesmith partnered with the Brooklyn Navy Yard on a 27,000 sf expansion of the Brooklyn STEAM Center in Building 77. The Center delivers industry-informed learning that gives high school students, known as scholars, a head start on their careers. Reflecting this mission, the process centered on their engagement. An observation day and conversations with students helped the team understand their needs. These insights informed layouts developed with administrators and instructors, along with brainstorming sessions, charrettes, and construction walkthroughs with scholars from construction technology, design/engineering, cybersecurity, and full-stack development pathways. The program includes classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, and a commons. Classrooms line the perimeter to maximize daylight, creating transparent spaces that showcase learning. The STEAM logo at the entry, comprised of tool-inspired abstract forms, nods to fabrication practices. Flexible furnishings, acoustic materials, and PVC-free textiles support adaptable learning, while warm pops of color balance the industrial palette.
