Passive House Network will present a broad introduction of Passive House goals and methodology, and how this movement is changing the way architects and builders think and work, making the architectural design a driver of climate, health, and social solutions. PHN Executive Director Ken Levenson will dive into the basic principles, history, certification, costs, systems, and applications of Passive House, including the new frontiers of Passive House design as it continues to challenge and change industry expectations.

Toward a Sustainable Architecture: Sustainable and Circular Construction Panel Discussion

Cleaning up construction processes and the built environment begins with the design team. Our three panelists will present multiple approaches available to design professionals with the goal of reducing the carbon impact of construction materials and methods as well as the ongoing carbon footprint of buildings over their lifetime. Topics will include the manufacturing and sourcing of materials, cleaner construction methods, clean energy solutions, and the deconstructability of buildings with an eye toward recycling of building materials.

Panelists:

Sylvie Binder is a Policy Advisor at the NYC Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice. Her work focuses on reducing the carbon impact of buildings and Construction. She is involved with the analysis of green house gas emission rates for a range of building systems and procedures. Sylvie holds a degree in Sustainable Development and American Studies from Columbia University

Felix Heisel, Assoc. AIA, is the Director of the Circular Construction Lab at Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art, and Planning. He is also a founding partner of 2hs architects and engineers in Germany, an office specializing in the development of circular construction prototypologies. Felix has written and lectured extensively on incorporating clean energy, digital fabrication and processes that reduce building waste, and he has received numerous awards. Felix graduated from the Berlin University of the Arts.

Wei Wang co-chairs the Sustainable Practice Group at Dattner Architects, where she is a Senior Associate. She co-chairs the AIANY COTE Materials Health and Circularity Subcommittee and serves as the national COTE liaison to AIA’s Young Architect’s Forum. Wei also serves as a visiting critic at Columbia University and Parsons.

Historic Districts Council Zoom Panel: Accessibility in Historic Districts

Please join HDC for a lunch-and-learn panel discussion on accessible design in the built environment, with a special focus on historic structures and scenic landmarks. With co-sponsorship from AIA Brooklyn, which is offering AIA Credits for this event, HDC is convening this panel as an extension of our work reviewing proposals at the LPC, which includes numerous proposals each year seeking to make buildings, sites, and parks accessible.

Bringing together panelists who steward historic structures, as well as panelists who work at the forefront of inclusive design, we hope this panel will help promote accessibility solutions for designated places. Panelists will discuss their work making New York’s historic structures and landscapes accessible, and their efforts to bring new forms of accessibility (such as neuro-inclusive design) to adaptive reuse projects and new construction both within and outside of historic districts.

The panel will include Giulietta Fiore, Deputy Director of the Historic House Trust; Danise Levine, creator of Universal Design New York 2 for the NYC Department of Design and Construction; Irina Verona, of Verona Carpenter Architects, a firm that focuses on neuro-inclusive design and will be moderated by HDC Adviser Corey Spitzer, Project Manager of Facilities and Construction at the Bronx Zoo, and President of the Association for Preservation Technology Northeast Chapter.
