INTERVIEW WITH SIYU XIAO

What motivated you to choose the field of architecture?

I’ve always been interested in painting and sculpting. I spent many years training on different forms of art. I chose architecture because it’s a more practical field, which values both creativity and technology.

What type of work are you most interested in?

I have been loving cultural and renovation projects, especially those punctuated solutions for neighborhoods and historical districts.

What has been your biggest challenge since obtaining your architecture degree?

From my architecture study to practice, the ultimate challenge to me is always balancing my preference with others’ expectations. Architecture is always about compromising and balancing benefits from various participants. It is somewhat hard to distinguish whether personal artistic preference is coherent with the success of the project.

What did you like about architecture school?

It is always the creativity, ideas and ambitions behind the projects. Another one should be the freedom of making your own piece of work.

Any criticisms of the architecture education experience?

I feel nowadays the architecture education is way too beyond the fundamentals of architecture. The practical part is almost eliminated from the school. I leant a lot of how a building is getting built after my graduation.

What are your professional goals?

Ultimate goal would be to start my own practice. But I have to get licensed first.

Who do you consider to be some of your favorite architects?

Antoni Gaudi, he is different.

Do you have a favorite building or city?

I would say La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and I’m looking forward to its completion.

What do you hope to get out of your AIA Brooklyn Chapter membership?

I’m hoping to get to know more people in the architectural field.
