What motivated you to choose the field of architecture?
In college I had a moment of reckoning that resulting in a change of majors from psychology to architecture. I was looking for something that involved all my seemingly unrelated strengths and interests. I rolled the dice with architecture, and it happened to be a good choice.
What type of work are you most interested in?
I practice out of KPF, so these days it’s all about NYC high-rises; however, I really am agnostic to scale and type. I think there’s something valuable to contribute in any size of project.
What has been your biggest challenge since obtaining your architecture degree?
Architectural education is a long journey, especially when you pair a 4 year master’s degree with a 4-5 year bachelor’s. Coming out of school, most of your peers who chose career paths with less time-consuming barriers to entry may have been in the work force for 4 years or more. Coming out of architecture school can make you feel a bit left behind in that regard, coupled with the disappointment many young designers have when they see their starting salary, I would say it’s the transition itself that is the most challenging.
What did you like about architecture school?
I went to the GSD, where many graduates end up in New York following graduation. Forming valuable and lasting relationships with colleagues that last beyond the walls of the academy is one of the best things about school
Any criticisms of the architecture education experience?
Architectural education is too often the punching bag for architects disappointed in the realities of the profession. I think the educational experience for any profession is heavily non-practical. It’s not a vocational school for technical training.
Who do you consider to be some of your favorite architects?
I admire anyone who can hold on to the wonder and curiosity they had in school, and respect anyone who is as proficient in their technical knowledge as they are in their design talent.

Do you have a favorite building or city?
New York City
What do you hope to get out of your AIA Brooklyn Chapter membership?
To connect with other Brooklyn-based architects.
