INTERVIEW WITH ALYSSA DURAN

Q. What motivated you to choose the field of architecture?

A. What motivated me to study architecture was the fact that, through it, I can contribute responsibly to the world by using my skill set to create a positive impact for present and future generations.

Q. What type of work are you most interested in?

A. I’m most interested in community-focused projects that prioritize sustainability.

Q. What has been your biggest challenge since obtaining your architecture degree?

A. My biggest challenge was starting my architecture degree during the pandemic as a first generation student. It was a particularly challenging time for me, as I had no prior background in architecture or related artistic fields.

Q. What did you like about architecture school?

A. I liked the hands-on experience and the versatility my school offered to students without prior experience in architecture to develop their own unique talents in related areas beyond architecture itself.

Q. Any criticisms of the architecture education experience?

A. I feel that the income we receive is not always commensurate with the amount of work required. At times, the value of our work is diminished compared to the effort and development needed to achieve a final project outcome.

Q. What are your professional goals?

A. I aspire to become a licensed architect and, hopefully, create my own firm in the future.

Q. Who do you consider to be some of your favorite architects?

A. I enjoy the work of Zaha Hadid, Mies van der Rohe, and, most recently, Fernanda Canales.

Q. Do you have a favorite building or city?

A. I love the Chrysler building in New York City.

Q. What do you hope to get out of your AIA Brooklyn Chapter membership?

A. I hope to make meaningful connections with emerging professionals who are part of this community.
